Oncology and Haematology

Who we are

PCH’s Department of Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology and Haematology provides a wide range of services for the diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders.

We are a large multi-disciplinary team, with medical and psychosocial expertise in providing inpatient, same day and outpatient care for children and young people with cancer, malignant blood disorders, non-malignant blood disorders such as haemophilia, and in managing haemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Services we provide

  • Developing treatment plans and providing comprehensive support for patients with cancer and haematology conditions (aged 0-16) and their families.
  • Caring for oncology and haematology inpatients in a dedicated unit (Ward 1A).
  • Managing patients requiring bone marrow transplant for cancer and other conditions through the Cord and Marrow Transplant Program.
  • Providing outpatient and same day care for patients within an Oncology and Haematology Outpatients and Same Day Care clinic (Clinic H, Level 1).
  • Coordinating telehealth services for patients.
  • Providing a Palliative Care service as well as bereavement support for families.
  • Facilitating patient participation in clinical trials through our involvement in national and international cooperative clinical trials groups such as the Children’s Oncology Group, Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology/Oncology Group, International Society for Paediatric Oncology and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
  • Providing follow up care and ongoing support for children and adolescents who have completed treatment through the Late Effects and Survivorship Program.
  • Facilitating the transition of children and adolescents to adult services where appropriate
    • Paediatric and Adolescent Haemophilia and other Bleeding Disorders, Therapy Centre.

Patients may also be able to access educational support from the School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health.

Eligible families may be able to access PCH’s parent accommodation.

Referrals

A formal referral is required to access this service.

We accept referrals from GPs, paediatric specialists and other PCH medical practitioners. 

Hours

Inpatients: 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Outpatients: Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 4.00pm

Same Day Care Unit: Monday and Thursday, 8.00am to 5.30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 8am to 6pm 

Emergency: 24 hours a day, seven days a week
