Who we are

Young people with pre-existing chronic conditions that are managed at PCH may be seen at the PCH ED who are 18 years old and under.

There are also Mental Health clinical nurse specialists who support mental health assessments in the PCH ED for children and young people who are 15 years old or under.

Services we provide

Diagnosis and treatment for children across a range of presentations including:

  • resuscitation
  • trauma
  • medical
  • surgical
  • mental health.

We accept referrals or transfers from surrounding and regional areas and, when required, we also manage external disasters involving large numbers of children.

Research

Multi-centre research studies are conducted within ED involving both nursing and medical staff, including the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative PREDICT. Staff involvement in internationally recognised research is demonstrated through achievements including publications and conference presentations.

Further research and role development training including Master of Nursing studies, Advanced Trainee and Consultant training is also supported. Registrars are encouraged and supported to conduct audits during their term in ED.

The ED has relationships with a number of external parties which contribute to research within the department including KidSafe WA, Telethon Kids Institute, Vaccine Trials Group and the WA State Trauma Registry Database.
