How to obtain a licence for a private healthcare facility


Requirement for licensing

Licensing of private hospitals is based on government legislation, the Private Hospitals and Health Services Act 1927 (the Act) (external site).

You need to apply for a licence if you operate a private hospital (healthcare facility) as defined by the Act.

Who needs to apply for a licence?

  • Private hospitals
  • Private day hospitals – class A (general anaesthesia)
  • Private day hospitals – class B (sedation)
  • Private day hospitals – class C ( renal)
  • Private day hospitals – class D (psychiatric day hospitals)
  • Private nursing posts
  • Private psychiatric hostels
  • Private nursing homes

Licensing fees 2023-24

Grant of licence

Fees are payable at the time a licence is granted. The fee comprises a fixed component for granting the licence ($1,360) and an Approval of Premises component that varies based on the maximum number of patients to be treated:

Renewal of licence

An annual renewal fee is payable based on the maximum number of patients to be treated:

Replacement of licence

The fee for replacement of a licence is $255 per facility.

New Licence Application Forms

To apply for a licence to operate a Private Hospital, Day Hospital, Psychiatric Day Hospital, Renal Dialysis Clinic, Psychiatric Hostel and or Nursing Post. Please complete the relevant application form and return to the Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit via the MyFT link provided.

How to pay for your licence

An invoice will be submitted  to the applicant via email. You can then pay your licence online (external site) using the convenient and secure BPOINT payment system. Payments can be made anytime online using a MasterCard or Visa credit card.
