Scholarships offered

Initial Registration scholarships are available for those studying to gain an initial qualification as an enrolled nurse, registered nurse or midwife.

Enrolled nurse

Applicants for an enrolled nurse scholarship will be studying a Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing).

Scholarships are available to students who have successfully completed semester 1 of a Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) at a Western Australian Vocational Education and Training Institution.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the commencement of  semester 1 of a Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing).

Enrolled nurse to registered nurse conversion

Scholarships are available to qualified enrolled nurses working in WA Health undertaking a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree, or equivalent, to convert their enrolled nurse qualification to registered nursing.

WA Health enrolled nurses converting to registered nursing can apply for a scholarship from commencement of their course.

Applicants must be employed as a WA Health enrolled nurse to be eligible for this scholarship.

Registered nurse and midwife

Scholarships are available for applicants studying to become a registered nurse or midwife who have successfully completed semesters 1 and 2  of a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) or dual degree.

When courses are completed on a part-time basis, Initial Registration scholarships can only be applied for once the total equivalent of a full-time study load of eight units has been completed.

WA Health registered nurses studying Initial Registration midwifery can apply for a scholarship from the commencement of their course. Please refer to the ‘Targeted Scholarship’ section of this webpage for more information.

Registered nurse

For those who are studying to complete a:

• Bachelor of Science (Nursing)
• Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Honours program
• Graduate Entry Masters in Nursing program.

Midwife

For those who are studying to complete a:

• Bachelor of Science (Midwifery)
• Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) Honours program
• Graduate Diploma of Midwifery or Master of Clinical Practice (Midwifery). These courses are for qualified WA Health registered nurses seeking an initial registration qualification as a midwife.

Registered nurse and midwife dual degree

For those who are studying to complete a Bachelor of Science (Nursing)/Bachelor of Science (Midwifery).

The WA Nursing and Midwifery Refresher Program has been designed to assist nurses and midwives, who have a gap in practice, but still meet AHPRA's recency of practice standard to refresh their knowledge and skills before re-entering the workforce.

The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office has partnered with the Australian College of Nursing and the Australian College of Midwives to assist nurses and midwives to undertake the theoretical online component for a nursing or midwifery refresher course.

• The Australian College of Nursing will deliver the refresher course for enrolled and registered nurses.
• The Australian College of Midwives will deliver the refresher course for midwives.

These courses are fully funded through the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office.

This course is only available to nurses and midwives currently residing in the state of Western Australia. Evidence of this will be required during application submission.

Nurses and midwives must hold general registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia with no conditions or restrictions; and meet the Recency of Practice Registration Standard of three (3) months practice in the last five years.

This scholarship is open for applications all year.

Applications can only be submitted through the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office, online.

You must also provide the following supporting documentation:

• a covering letter, briefly stating personal aims and goals for undertaking the program and where you would like to work
• a Curriculum Vitae (CV) / resume, detailing past and current nursing or midwifery experience; including areas worked, clinical caseload and dates
• evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent residency status (e.g. copy of passport, birth certificate, citizenship documents or visa)
• evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia.

Attachments can only be uploaded in PDF, JPEG or Word formats and must be no larger than 2MB each in size.

This scholarship is to assist enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives undertaking an accredited course that leads to renewal of registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (external site).

The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office will fully fund 100% of course costs upon successful completion.

This scholarship is open for applications all year.

Eligibility criteria

• Applicants must apply for this scholarship prior to commencing studies. If you have already commenced study prior to applying, your application will be deemed ineligible. Only online applications are accepted.
• Applicants must be an Australian citizen or in possession of a permanent residency visa (or equivalent) and be currently residing in WA.
• Document supporting name change (if different to proof of identity listed above).
• Covering letter.
• Supporting documentation from AHPRA or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia regarding your previous registration.

This scholarship is for enrolled nurses employed within the WA public health sector who wish to undertake further professional development. Study must be through a registered training organisation, leading to an Advanced Diploma of Nursing.

If successful in being granted a scholarship, it will cover up to 50 per cent of course costs. Scholarship recipients will receive the funding upon evidence of successful completion of the course.

How to apply for this scholarship

You will need to enrol in an Advanced Diploma of Nursing, through a registered training organisation.

Only online applications are accepted.

As part of your application you will need to attach the following documents:

• proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency visa
• proof of your current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) (external site). (i.e. A copy of current registration certificate or printout from the NMBA website.)
• evidence of enrolment in course
• document supporting name change (if different to proof of identity listed above)
• cover letter (max 2 page) detailing previous experience, reasons for undertaking study and how this scholarship will assist in your professional development.

This scholarship is for enrolled nurses employed within the WA public health sector who wish to seek financial assistance for upskilling in medication and IV administration competence.

If successful in being granted a scholarship, it will cover 100% per cent of course costs. Scholarship recipients will receive the funding upon evidence of successful completion of the course.

There is an opportunity for ENs toaccess VET student loans (external sites) on enrolment if they meet the eligibility requirements, as established by the Australian Government Department of Education – please follow-up VET student loans enquiries with your preferred training provider.

How to apply for this scholarship

1. Contact an accredited Training Provider and enrol in the nationally recognised Unit of Study:
   • HLTENN007 Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy – released 2015
     Or
     HLTENN040 - Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy – released 2021
   • Eligibility for scholarship will only be approved where Enrolment is with an accredited Education Provider, as deemed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) listed on the NMBA website (external site) (*under subheading ‘Accreditation’).
2. Only online applications are accepted.
   • The CNMO encourages ENs to enrol into this unit of study.
3. As part of your application you will need to upload the following documents:
• Evidence from Nurse Manager you are employed permanently in the WA Health public sector as an enrolled nurse - ENs employed casually are not eligible for this scholarship.
• Proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency visa.
• Proof of your current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) (external site). (i.e. A copy of current registration certificate or printout from the NMBA website.)
• Evidence of enrolment in course.
• Document supporting name change (if different to proof of identity listed above).
• Cover letter (max 2 page) detailing previous experience, reasons for undertaking study and how this scholarship will assist in your professional development.
4. To obtain your scholarship payment you will need to attach the following documents:
   • Academic Transcript showing successful completion of the unit of study HLTENN007 or HLTENN040 – Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy
   • Training Provider invoice showing cost of the unit of study HLTENN007 or HLTENN040 – Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy.

The Rhonda Marriott Scholarship provides support and recognises the contribution of Aboriginal nurses and midwives and the crucial role that they play in WA Health.

This scholarship assists WA Health employed Aboriginal registered nurses and midwives with the costs associated with postgraduate education. Eligible courses include Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters.

Scholarship funding covers the full cost of each unit of study per semester and funds are dispersed once the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office have received a copy of results showing successful completion of each unit.

On your application you must select that you are applying for the Rhonda Marriott scholarship.

Rhonda Marriott is a Winthrop Research Professor who has been a registered nurse and midwife for more than 40 years. Rhonda is a professionally and academically qualified senior university manager with research expertise in clinical education and Aboriginal health and extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum and program development. This scholarship is provided to registered WA Health and WA Aboriginal Community Controlled Health (ACCHO) midwives wishing to complete courses of study leading to eligibility with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) for endorsement as a midwife qualified to prescribe schedule 2, 3, 4 and 8 medicines.

The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office (CNM Office) provides funding towards tuition course fees upon successful completion for the below approved courses:

• Graduate Certificate in Midwifery Screening Diagnostics and Prescribing, Curtin University
• Graduate Certificate in Midwifery Diagnostics and Prescribing, Edith Cowan University
• Prescribing for Midwives, Griffith University
• Master of Midwifery Practice (Advanced Clinical) with Medication Endorsement, La Trobe University

Eligibility:

• WA Health midwife employed in a fixed-term or permanent capacity.
• NMBA registration as a midwife that is equivalent of three years’ full-time clinical practice (5,000 hours) in the past six years.
• You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia, humanitarian visa holder or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency.
• International student visa holders are ineligible.

Postgraduate scholarships are available for WA Health nurses and midwives to complete postgraduate courses to advance their knowledge and skills in a chosen field.

Examples of postgraduate courses include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and masters by coursework/research.

Postgraduate scholarships are only available to full time and part time WA Health employees.

Registered nurse specialisation

Registered nurse specialisation scholarships are available for WA Health registered nurses to complete specialisation courses at a postgraduate level to advance their knowledge and skills in a chosen field.

Midwife

Midwifery scholarships are available for WA Health registered midwives to complete courses such as a Master of Midwifery. Examples of other courses include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and masters by coursework/research.

Nurse practitioner

Nurse practitioner scholarships assist WA Health registered nurses to complete a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner).

Funding allocation for postgraduate scholarships

Scholarships are awarded based on current and projected:

• workforce requirements
• areas of high clinical need.

Priority is given to WA Health employees.

WA Health registered nurses studying a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery seeking initial registration as a midwife can apply for a Targeted Scholarship.

WA Health Paid Student Midwifery Model participants can also apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship funding is limited. Eligible applicants are strongly advised to secure a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) to reduce out of pocket expenses on course tuition fees.
