Clown Doctors celebrate 25 years of bringing joy to WA children

The much-loved Clown Doctors program is celebrating 25 years of helping make hospital experiences brighter for children and families across Western Australia.
Having first begun rounds at Princess Margaret Hospital in December 2000, the program continues its work today at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH), supporting the wellbeing of children receiving care.
Recognisable by their red noses, colourful costumes and playful approach, Clown Doctors work alongside healthcare teams to help reduce anxiety, create positive hospital experiences and provide welcome moments of distraction and laughter for children and their families.
PCH is home to a team of seven Clown Doctors who visit wards across the hospital, using music, storytelling, improvisation and play to connect with patients of all ages.
Clown Doctor Dr Goose, known off-stage as Luke Ryan, said each interaction was unique, with performers adapting to the child, their family and the hospital environment.
He said everyday hospital items could become part of imaginative play, helping create special moments of comfort and distraction for children during their hospital stay.
The impact of the program has been felt by thousands of children and families over the past quarter century. A report examining the program found that families who interacted with Clown Doctors experienced feelings of respite and relief during challenging times.
Clown Doctors Australia Chief Executive Officer Emma Pollard shared the program provided important moments of hope for children and families navigating some of life's most difficult circumstances. She said the longstanding partnership with PCH helped create positive healthcare experiences and encouraged children to feel more comfortable receiving treatment and care.
Over the past 25 years, Clown Doctors have become a valued part of the hospital experience for many patients, families and staff, highlighting the important role that play, laughter and human connection can have in supporting positive health outcomes.
PCH congratulates Clown Doctors Australia on this significant milestone and thanks the team for its ongoing contribution to the care and wellbeing of children and families across Western Australia.
