Rhino brace
It is common to have questions as you and your child get used to the brace.
This step-by-step video shows the correct way to fit your baby’s Rhino brace.
Frequently asked questions
We have compiled answers to some of the most common queries below.
What causes developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)?
The exact cause is unknown, but DDH is more common in first-borns, girls, breech births, and those with a family history.
My baby is getting some rubbing behind the knees, is this normal and what can I do to stop it?
Your baby may experience some rubbing behind their knees from the brace. Wearing a pair of leggings or pants can help to prevent this.
If the rubbing persists and you notice redness that doesn’t resolve after 20 minutes of removing the brace, or a sore is forming, please contact the orthotics department.
The foam of the brace is slipping out to the sides, what can I do?
If this occurs, please contact the orthotics department to arrange an appointment. We can sew the straps to the foam and prevent this.
The tummy strap is getting short and doesn’t do up, what can I do?
If the tummy strap is getting too short to close, please contact the orthotics department. We will arrange an appointment to sew some extra Velcro onto the tummy strap.
Will my baby be able to roll over in the brace?
Yes.
Your baby will eventually learn how to roll over in the brace. It may take a while for them to learn how to do this, but it is possible.
If this is causing frustration for your baby, you can help them practise rolling in the brace for short periods of time (>5 min). This may help your baby learn how to roll in the brace and perhaps help them feel more settled.
Can my baby crawl, stand and walk in the brace?
Yes.
Your baby can crawl, stand and walk in the brace.
If you notice a fracture line or bend in the blue plastic, please contact the orthotics department. Crawling and walking can very occasionally cause the plastic to buckle between the legs. This can mean the hips are no longer at the correct angle.
How will they fit in a car seat?
If your baby is only in the Rhino brace for nights and naps, we recommend that you do not use the brace in the car.
If your baby is in the brace for 23 hours per day, we will refer your baby for an appointment with an occupational therapist who will be able to adjust your car seat as necessary.
What should I do if my baby sleeps on their side?
Your baby will not be able to sleep on their side in the brace. It may take a couple of nights for them to get used to sleeping in a different position, so they may be a bit unsettled overnight.
Most babies adjust to sleeping with the brace within the first 2 weeks.
Will my baby get hot in the brace?
Your baby may be hot in the brace and possibly sweat a bit more, particularly in summer.
Please ensure you keep a pair of shorts or pants under the brace to protect the skin.
Change pants more often if they are damp.
It is important to keep skin clean and dry to avoid skin irritation, particularly behind the knees.
Can I use a sleep suit/sack/bag?
Yes.
You can use a sleep suit/sack/bag, but you will most likely need to size up to fit the brace.
Some companies sell sleeping bags specifically made to fit over hip braces, including:
How will I know when the brace is too small?
There are a couple of things to look out for.
The brace may be too small if:
- Your baby is starting to fuss when wearing brace.
- The back section of the brace is digging into your baby’s back.
