Centre for Neonatal Research and Education
The Centre for Neonatal Research and Education (CNRE) coordinates the academic activities of the medical, nursing and allied health staff working in Neonatology and aims to prevent death and disability associated with diseases in newborns by increasing knowledge and understanding of clinical, biochemical and physiological processes of health and disease in newborn babies.
Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born prematurely (before 37 completed weeks gestation), and prematurity is the leading cause of death among children under five years of age.
The CNRE was established in 2011, and was pivotal in securing $2.5 million National Health and Medical Research Council funding as a Centre of Research Excellence in 2013.
The CNRE has provided education at state and national levels by offering a Graduate Diploma and master’s degree in Neonatology through UWA between 2014 and 2017, as well as hosting regular education workshops.
Participating in research
Ongoing involvement in research studies is essential to keep improving the care we give to babies. You may be approached by members of our staff regarding your baby participating in some of our current research studies. We cannot say if the new treatment will help your baby until we analyse the study results, but by being involved in research studies you and your baby will help us further improve our care for others in the future.
