Simulation suite training

The PCH Simulation Suite is a state-of-the-art simulated clinical teaching environment that allows healthcare professional to hone their skills and improve their clinical practice in realistic, high pressure situations. 

The suite contains: 

  • a fully fitted out theatre
  • an Intensive Care bay
  • Emergency Department or general ward bay
  • a mobile unit that can be taken onto the wards for training
  • programmable mannequins in adult, child and baby versions
  • audio-visual equipment that allows for scenarios to be filmed and playback to a separate debriefing room to identify good clinical practice and areas for improvement. 

PCH Simulation Suite is an ANZCA accredited centre in Australia.

  • Actors and mannequins replace real patients, with a wide range of both physical and emotional scenarios available:
  • crises, such as haemorrhage, shock or failed airway
  • risk assessment for mental health
  • discussing bad news with families or carers, including difficult diagnoses and mortality
  • day to day ward round.

Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation have been integral in providing grants to purchase mannequins and provide new training courses for the Simulation Suites.

Adolescent Medicine Simulation

The Adolescent Medicine Simulation Course is designed for health care clinicians who work with adolescents.

The course syllabus includes adolescent neurodevelopment and strategies to use when working with adolescent patients.

The expert faculty from the Adolescent Medicine and Eating Disorder Team discuss issues relating to sexual health, mental health, eating disorders and substance use. This interactive and hands-on course runs over two consecutive days with a certificate of attendance following completion.

Advanced Neonatal Simulation

The Advanced Neonatal Simulation course is aimed at Doctors, Nurses and Midwives who work in neonatal areas both within CAHS and WA Health.

The course will consist of high fidelity immersive simulations and advanced skills stations. The expert faculty are Neonatologists and Simulation specialists.

Applicants should have a minimum of six months experience of working in neonatal healthcare and completed NRP.

Connecting with children and families

This course is for senior health professionals (>5 years clinical experience) who would like to improve their communication skills. 

The two day course is a mix of small group, large group and simulated patients discussions with feedback from experienced facilitators. This is a small course designed to create a safe space for learning.

Effective management of anaesthetic crisis (EMAC)

EMAC focuses on the role of the anaesthetist as the team leader during an anaesthetic crisis. It also focuses on the interaction with the team around the anaesthetist in order to utilise skills and resources.

This course is a requirement of the ANZCA training program.

Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia

Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia (MEPA) is a single day course designed to equip consultant anaesthetists and GP anaesthetists with strategies to deal with emergencies in paediatric anaesthetics.

The course is facilitated by expert consultant paediatric anaesthetists. The course consists of clinical stations and simulated  clinical scenarios. There will also be a chance to discuss the latest updates in paediatric anaesthesia and resuscitation. MEPA is ideal for anaesthetists who undertake occasional paediatric lists or those who provide out of hours care or are involved in the care of sick children.


This three day simulation instructors course aims to give participants the knowledge and skills to design, deliver, debrief and evaluate their own simulation sessions effectively. This very popular course is facilitated by an experienced interprofessional faculty.

Simulation jumpstart

The Simulation Jumpstart course is an introductory course for healthcare professionals who have an interested in extending their knowledge and skills in delivering simulation based education within their own work environment.

This full-day course consists of the principals involved In simulation-based education in healthcare such as scenario writing, learning outcomes, setting the scene, pre-briefing, use of mannequins, scenario endpoints and debriefing.

Step Up for Leadership

This two day course is designed to help registrars gain skills and knowledge to be able to step into the Consultant role effectively. 

Small and large group teaching and simulated sessions and actors help bring scenarios and difficult conversations to life. Sessions on work-life balance, private practice and ethical dilemmas allow conversations around topics not commonly covered in other curriculum. 

Participants will complete a Myers-Briggs assessment prior to the course followed by a session with a clinical psychologist to understand the results, which are then consolidated on the course.

Training in Professional Skills

The two day Training in Professional Skills course is for Surgical Registrars with a focus upon communication and teamwork.

Trauma Team Simulation Training (TTST)

This course is ran by the DoH WA State-Wide Trauma Education team. It is for healthcare professionals working in trauma areas throughout WA involving adult and paediatric based trauma.
