Chronic Illness Peer Support (ChIPS) program

The Chronic Illness Peer Support (ChIPS) is a dynamic, supportive program designed to connect young people aged 12 to 25 who are living with chronic illnesses.

The program focuses on building friendships, sharing experiences, and offering support in a fun, interactive environment.

ChIPS is run through the Department of Adolescent Medicine at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) and is open to young people across Perth and regional WA.

What is ChIPS?

ChIPS offers a unique opportunity for young people living with chronic illnesses to connect with others who understand their experiences.

Through a range of group activities, social events, and leadership opportunities, ChIPS helps participants build confidence, friendships, and valuable life skills.

Whether through weekly group sessions, holiday intensives, social activities, or leadership training, ChIPS is designed to support, inspire, and empower young people with chronic illness.

How can you get involved?

There are many ways to get involved with ChIPS, depending on your needs and interests. Below are some of the key activities and opportunities available:

Peer support groups

  • 8-week peer support groups: Meet weekly for 1.5 hours across 8 weeks, using music, art, games, and discussions to explore what it’s like to live with a chronic illness. It’s a chance to share, learn, and connect in a safe and supportive space.
  • Holiday intensives: These 2-day programs take place during the school holidays and offer the same creative, peer support activities in a condensed format. These programs are especially useful for those who live further away from PCH.

Camps and social events

  • Annual camps: A fun, 3-day, 2-night camp filled with activities like archery, kayaking, drama, art, and more. It’s a chance to relax, enjoy nature, and make new friends in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Social events: Join in on exciting activities like escape rooms, mini golf, cooking classes, movie nights, and more. These events are designed to be fun and inclusive, with plenty of opportunities to meet others and enjoy life.

The socials and camps are always tailored to meet the needs and abilities of the participants.

Leadership and youth development

  • Leadership training: ChIPS offers young people the chance to develop leadership skills through training in areas like communication, team building, public speaking, and more. This is a great way to gain confidence and learn skills that can be used in all areas of life.
  • Peer leaders: Peer leaders play a key role in the ChIPS program, helping to facilitate groups, activities, and events. Peer leaders have the chance to mentor other and develop leadership skills.

How to get started

Step 1: To get involved in ChIPS, you need to have a referral from your primary healthcare professional at PCH. This can be completed online by your medical team.

Step 2: Once your referral is submitted, the ChIPS team will review it and contact you to discuss your interest in the program and your suitability for the activities available.
