Women booked to have a baby at Swan District Hospital and who are due on or after November 24 will be contacted by St John of God Midland Public Hospital during the next few weeks about the uninterrupted transfer of their care.
The new hospital will open at 7am on November 24 when Swan District Hospital will close.
St John of God Midland Public Hospital chief executive Glen Power said staff at both hospitals had undertaken significant planning to ensure a smooth transition for women expecting babies about this time.
“Women due to have their babies from November 24 onwards can expect to receive seamless care,” Dr Power said.
“The same applies for all the medical services being transitioned between the two hospitals at the same time.”
The new hospital will offer a free, publicly-funded maternity service.
The hospital will follow a midwifery-led model that is supported by a strong contingent of specialist obstetricians and paediatricians based on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A home-visiting midwifery service will be associated with the maternity unit.
Swan Kalamunda Health Service executive director Philip Aylward said Swan District Hospital staff were working closely with St John of God Health Care to ensure a continued level of high quality service for patients transferring from Swan District Hospital to the new hospital.
The new maternity unit provides first class facilities, including five spacious birth suites, a 22-bed public maternity unit with all single rooms and a six-cot neonatal nursery for babies born at 34 weeks and over.
Once the hospital opens, pregnant women will be referred to the hospital by their GP unless they require more specialised care at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
